Macoto Rey: BOOPing in Japan
Betty Boop made her first visit to Japan in 1935 with the release of A Language All My Own, a film that was created as a love letter to Betty’s already impressive fan base in Japan; a fan base that continues to this day. So, when it was time for BOOP! The Musical to make its international debut, Japan was the natural choice.
BOOP! The Musical launched it’s 6-city Japanese-language tour in 2026 with celebrated actress and singer Macoto Rey in the role of Betty Boop.
Widely known for work with the Takarazuka Revue, a Japanese all-female musical theatre troupe, Macoto Rey’s exceptional vocals, dancing, and dramatic range had already established her as a favorite of Japanese audiences. It also made her the perfect choice for the role of Betty.
Reviewers praised Rey’s performance, dubbing her the “embodiment of Betty Boop.”
And, if you’re wondering what BOOP! The Musical sounds like in Japanese… check out Macoto Rey in this amazing video clip included here, which features the song Where I Wanna Be, the same song that Jasmine Amy Rogers sings in the video included in section above.
